Cautions and contraindications

Contraindications include:

  • moderate or severe renal impairment
  • impaired hepatic function
  • severe hypoproteinaemia
  • known immunodeficiency
  • bone marrow dysfunction, leucopenia, neutropenia, anaemia, thrombocytopenia - secondary to causes other than RA
  • serious infections
  • known hypersensitivity to leflunomide
  • women who are pregnant or who are breast feeding - after stopping treatment the manufacturer advises that a woman should wait for 2 years before trying to conceive
  • this drug has not been tested in people under 18 years old and therefore is contraindicated in patients below this age
