This is a now rare condition of unknown origin, formerly thought to be a reaction to the tubercle bacillus. Principally, young women are affected. Presentation is with a symmetrical eruption of painful ulcerating nodules on the posterior aspect of the lower legs. The patient is often obese. Treatment is difficult. Weight reduction and avoidance of low temperature environments may be of benefit.
