Some features of acne exoriee are presented below:

  • excoriation of existing or imagined acne lesions
  • occurs in females more than males; mainly during late teenage years
  • it has been suggested that the lesions are a protective device to conceal emotional failure
  • distribution - excoriated lesions generally occur on the face, neck, upper chest and shoulders
  • lesions may persist for many years despite resolution of acne
  • patients often fail to respond to treatment; often there is a latent phobic state

Other associated psychiatric conditions include body image disorder, depression, anxiety, OCD, delusional disorders, personality disorders, and social phobias (1).
