If the patient's blood pressure is consistently within the target range and there is no evidence of end organ damage - for example, renal impairment, hypertensive retinopathy - then drug treatment may be reduced and in some instances, withdrawn completely.

The eligibility criteria for withdrawal of antihypertensive medication are described in more detail in the menu item below.

However, in all cases:

  • non-pharmacological measures should be continued
  • long term monitoring of blood pressure is mandatory
