The glucocorticoids as a group have a variable degree of mineralocorticoid effect depending on their structure. The structure determines their affinity for mineralocorticoid receptors within the kidney; at supraphysiological concentrations, mineralocorticoid effects become more important as endogenous aldosterone is displaced from receptor sites.
