This condition usually necessitates treatment when joint function is threatened. Treatment is dependent on site, age of patient, and required function. For example if there is avascular necrosis of the femoral head in an old person who is relatively immobile then an arthroplasty is the obvious choice. If avascular necrosis of the femoral head occurs in a younger person then a realignment osteotomy or arthrodesis may be treatment options.
