Indications for transbronchial biopsy

Authoring team

Transbronchial biopsy is used to diagnose parenchymal lung disease.

The diagnostic yield is greatest where the histology is characteristic:

  • sarcoid
  • lymphangitis carcinomatosa
  • alveolar cell carcinoma

Transbronchial biopsy is less effective when the pathology is patch, for example fibrosing alveolitis.
