The complications of strokes may be organised according to system into cerebral, systemic and cardiac sequelae.

However, note that these may have a very different time course. Cerebral complications tend to occur rapidly, whereas many of the systemic ones occur after several weeks.

Recurrence of stroke is a major complication.
