Authoring team

Chronic maxillary sinusitis - more correctly now termed chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) - may occur if an acute maxillary sinusitis does not resolve and characterized by persistent sinonasal symptoms with mucosal inflammation lasting 12 weeks or more. (1)

An estimated 10% of the adult population is affected by chronic sinusitis in the UK. (2)

It is diagnosed when at least two cardinal symptoms (mucopurulent nasal drainage, nasal blockage or obstruction, facial pain/pressure/fullness, and hyposmia) are present along with objective evidence of inflammation for a duration exceeding 12 weeks. (3)
