Aetiology
Causes include:
- secondary to ascending urinary tract infection - occurs most commonly when an abnormality causes ureteric reflux or stasis eg ureteric obstruction.
- pathology in the kidney itself eg renal stones, pelvi-ureteric obstruction
- haematogenous infection eg as a complication of septicaemia (often by gram-ve Bacillus)
