Sclerosis of breast tissue
With the advent of breast screening, areas of excessive fibrosis or sclerosis that occur in the breast following stromal involution have become significant because on mammography their appearance mimics cancer.
A number of terms are used to describe fibrotic breast lesions including:
- sclerosing adenosis
- radial scars
- complex sclerosing lesions
- sclerosing papillomatosis
- duct adenoma
- infiltrating epitheliosis
Excision biopsy is often required to obtain a diagnosis.
