Pena has suggested the following classification of anorectal malformations:
In males:
- perineal, cutaneous fistula
- recto-urethral fistula:
- bulbar urethra
- prostatic urethra
- rectovesical fistula
- imperforate anus without fistula
- rectal atresia
In females:
- perineal cutaneous fistula
- vestibular fistula
- persistent cloaca
- imperforate anus without fistula
- rectal atresia
