Alcohol and heart failure
Most patients with heart failure should be advised to drink alcohol in moderation. Heavy alcohol consumption has the following unwanted effects:
- myocardial depression
- myocardial toxicity
- increased risk of arrhythmias especially atrial fibrillation
- increased risk of hypertension
Patients with alcohol-related cardiomyopathy should abstain from alcohol.
