Histology
The surface of the kidney overlying the necrotic papilla is depressed due to atrophy of the renal parenchyma.
The characteristics of necrotic papillae are:
- fragmentation and sloughing of the papillae
- calcification of the papillae
The papillary necrosis associated with diabetes mellitus is characterised by papillae at the same stage of acute necrosis. In contrast analgesic abuse nephropathy is characterised by papillae at various stages of necrosis.
