Differential diagnosis
- cutaneous changes may be a part of CREST syndrome
- eosinophilic fasciitis - occurs in association with eosinophilia and hypergammaglobulinaemia. There is widespread thickening of the skin as a result of inflammation of the fascia. It may occur following excessive muscle exercise.
- pseudoscleroderma - porphyria cutanea tarda, acromegaly, carcinoid syndrome
- mixed connective tissue disease
- morphoea
- chemically induced - vinyl chloride, pentazocine, bleomycin
