Causes of ulcerative colitis include:
- infective causes
- gonorrhoea
- bacillary dysentery
- amoebiasis
- herpes simplex colitis - more common in homosexuals and patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome
- lymphogranuloma venereum
- ischaemic colitis
- inflammatory bowel disease
- Behcet's syndrome
- radiation
