Indicators of probable organism
There are some useful clinical indices towards the likely organism in meningitis:
- meningococcus - petechial rash
- pneumococcus - fractured skull, ear disease, congenital central nervous system lesion
- coliforms - congenital central nervous system lesion
- partially treated pyogenic infection - previous antimicrobial therapy
- enterovirus - rash or pleurodynia
- polio - foreign travel or immunisation
- leptospirosis - occupational history infected water, prostration, myalgia, conjunctivitis and jaundice
