Costal groove
The costal groove of a rib is the recess on the internal surface of the rib near to its inferior margin:
- generally, it extends from the level of the neck anteriorly to taper out in the anterior third of the rib
- provides a protective channel for passage of the neurovascular bundle of each intercostal space
