An eosinophil is a white blood cell with characteristic granules in its cytoplasm and a bilobed nucleus

  • derived from a promyelocyte pluripotent stem cell within the bone marrow
  • eosinophils are capable of phagocytosis
  • predominate on the inner surfaces of the body which have contact with the external environment
  • are involved with immune and allergic reactions
  • represent only 2-5 % of the total leukocyte population
  • are instrumental in the fight against parasites that are too big to be phagocytosed
