Voltage-gated entry
Calcium ions may enter into a number of cell types by passing down an electrical and chemical gradient through protein membrane channels. The channels are triggered to open by a change in the voltage across the cell membrane e.g. due to an action potential.
Cells in which voltage-gated entry is important include epithelial muscle cells.
