Up to 16% of patients treated with zidovudine for more than 6 months will experience ANA-induced myopathy.
Histological examination of the muscle reveals ragged red fibres, which are characteristic of mitochondrial myopathy. There is a reduction in the oxidative phosphorylation capacity of the muscle.
