Prognosis
The prognosis in intraventricular haemorrhage is strongly dependent on the size of the clot:
- small clot, just around the source, very good prognosis because the germinal layer involutes
- larger clots cause more widespread damage
By the time a baby leaves hospital after IVH, a rough delineation into risk groups can be made:
- low risk: normal scan or uncomplicated IVH
- medium risk: ventricular dilatation
- high risk: hydrocephalus or cerebral atrophy
