There are two key groups of seizure:
- partial seizures:
- simple partial seizures: awareness preserved, EEG shows unilateral paroxysmal activity during attack
- complex partial seizures: awareness is impaired, there are bilateral EEG abnormalities during the attack
- generalised seizures:
- the seizure may be generalized from the outset or may start as a partial seizure
