Pre-operative preparation
In preparation for a femoral hernia repair, the following are relevant:
- choice of anaesthesia:
- general anaesthesia: preferrable and mandatory if any possibility of strangulation
- local anaesthesia: requires extensive infiltration
- shaving:
- immediately pre-operatively
- both the groin on the affected side and the lower abdomen
- catheterization: reduces the risk of the extraperitoneal bladder forming one side of the hernial sac
- treatment of obstruction if strangulation has occurred:
- intravenous fluids
- nasogastric aspiration
