Aetiology
Hydrops is seen in:
- haemolytic disease of the newborn; usually a second or later pregnancy
- twin to twin transfusion
- haemoglobin Bart's disease - homozygous alpha0 thalassaemia
- fifth disease - erythrovirus (parvovirus) type B19 infection
- respiratory disease - cystic adenomatoid malformation, pulmonary hypoplasia, diaphragmatic hernia
- cardiac failure, for example secondary to supraventricular tachycardia, arteriovenous malformation, congenital heart block, rhabdomyoma
- chromosomal syndromes, including Turner's, and trisomies 13, 18 and 21
