The key elements controlling erythropoiesis are:

  • erythropoietin:
    • stimulated by hypoxia due to anaemia or respiratory compromise
    • increases RNA and DNA turnover in haemopoietic stem cells
    • stimulates:
      • progenitor proliferation
      • iron uptake into progenitor
      • haemoglobin synthesis in progenitor
    • maturation time is reduced

other hormones:

þþ oestrogens inhibit

  • androgens stimulate
  • a ready supply of specific precursors and co-factors:
    • amino acids
    • iron
    • vitamin B12
    • folic acid
    • vitamin C
