Follicle-stimulating hormone in the menstrual cycle
Follicle-stimulating hormone is involved in the early and late maturation of ovarian follicles; in the latter stage the effect is also dependent on luteinizing hormone.
There is also a rise in the level of FSH at around the time of ovulation; the function of this is unclear.
The release of FSH from the anterior pituitary is directly reduced by the action of inhibin.
