Following a TIA, there is an:

  • risk of stroke after TIA was 14.5% at 1 year (1)
    • a systematic review revealed risk of stroke was 9.9%, 13.4%, and 17.3% at 2, 30, and 90 days (2)
  • risks for myocardial infarction or non-stroke vascular death after transient ischaemic attack are each 2% per year (3)

The exact risk depends upon the type, frequency and cause of the TIA. For example, several episodes associated with greater than 75% stenosis of one carotid artery carries a much worse prognosis than a single attack in a patient with mild hypertension.
