Negative predictive value
This is the post-test probability of a negative test. This test addresses the question - if a person has a negative test, what is the probability that he or she does not have the condition:
- true negative / (false negative + true negative) x 100%
Target Disorder Present | Target Disorder Absent | |
Test result positive | True Positive (TP) | False Positive (FP) |
Test result negative | False Negative (FN) | True Negative (TN) |
NPV is affected by the prevalence of the disease
- in low prevalence settings, even a test with moderate sensitivity and specificity can have a high NPV
