Aetiology
Classification:
- primary gout (95%) - an inherited disorder that causes an overproduction, or underexcretion of uric acid. The underlying biochemical defect is not known.
- secondary gout (5%):
- increased formation of uric acid
- reduced excretion of uric acid
- drugs / toxins that cause overproduction or underexcretion of uric acid
