Synthesis
Enzyme synthesis may be influenced by a number of factors:
- normal growth e.g. bone-derived alkaline phosphatase increases during the pubertal growth spurt
- genetic deficiency e.g. inborn errors of metabolism
- pathology e.g. biliary obstruction increases hepatic alkaline phosphatase production
- drug action e.g. hepatic microsomal enzyme inhibitors and inducers
