Right iliac fossa pain (RIF)
Right iliac fossa pain is a common presentation to the emergency department. Although appendicitis is the most common surgical emergency, there are many other possible causes of right iliac fossa pain that must be considered when evaluating these patients, including:
- mesenteric adenitis in the young
- leaking duodenal ulcer
- diverticulitis
- pelvic inflammatory disease
- salpingitis
- psoas abscess
- ureteric colic
- inflamed Meckel's diverticulum
- ectopic pregnancy
- torsion
- Crohn's disease
- terminal ileitis
- biliary disease, if the gall bladder is low-lying
