Differential diagnosis
Biliary colic may be strongly suggested by the history but the clinical impression should always be verified by appropriate investigations such as ultrasound.
Other diseases with similar pain include:
- duodenal ulcer
- gastro-oesophageal reflux
- pancreatitis
- myocardial infarction
- right sided testicular pain in the T6 - T10 dermatomes
Colonic carcinoma may be overlooked on the assumption that postprandial pain in this condition is being produced by gallstones.
Irritable bowel syndrome may be mistaken for gallbladder discomfort.
