Aetiology
Usually, there is an identifiable cause in Fourniere's Gangrene:
- perianal or rectal infection eg secondary to inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis, colonic cancer or instrumentation
- skin inflammation or infection eg pressure ulceration, hidradenitis suppurativa
- urological or genital infection eg urinary tract infection, urethral injury such as traumatic catheterisation
- immunosuppression eg HIV/AIDS, haematological malignancies
- perineal trauma
