Mode of action
- bacteriostatic: inhibition of protein synthesis in the bacterial ribosomes via disruption of the translation process from RNA to DNA
- bactericidal: mechanism unknown
Also neomycin may be used in hepatic encephalopathy where it:
- may reduce the gut flora which posess urease activity (so leading to a reduction in ammonia production in the gut)
- may also inhibit absorption of protein in the gut
