Prognosis
Prognosis is dependent on the presence or absence of complications of hypertension e.g. cerebrovascular accident, renal impairment.
- mortality from elective surgery - less than 2%; approximately 80% of patients become normotensive following surgery
- 96% 5-year survival with benign disease
- 44% 5-year survival with malignant disease
- recurrence rate - less than 10%
Presence of complications, urinary dopamine and homovanillic acid indicate a poor prognosis.
