Genetic loci
A recent genome-wide search for human type-1 susceptibility genes revealed five loci:
- IDDM1:
- chromosome 6p21
- the gene is in the major histocompatibility complex
- accounts for 42% of the familial clustering of the disease in the study
- IDDM2:
- chromosome 11p15
- this is near the insulin gene
- accounts for 10% of the familial clustering of the disease in the study
- IDDM4:
- chromosome 11q
- chromosome 11q
- IDDM5:
- chromosome 6q
- chromosome 6q
- a fifth locus may exist on chromosome 18
