Rare causes of hyperprolactinaemia
Rarer causes of hyperprolactinaemia include:
- primary thyroid failure:
- thyrotrophin releasing hormone - TRH - also stimulates prolactin release
- thyrotrophin releasing hormone - TRH - also stimulates prolactin release
- ectopic prolactin production:
- a bronchial carcinoma may produce prolactin
- a bronchial carcinoma may produce prolactin
- acute or chronic renal failure:
- due to delayed clearance of prolactin
- due to delayed clearance of prolactin
- acromegaly:
- 30% of cases have hyperprolactinaemia and galactorrhoea
- 30% of cases have hyperprolactinaemia and galactorrhoea
- empty sella syndrome
