Complications
- cerebral venous sinus thrombosis:
- probably a complication of polycythaemia
- cerebral abscess
- polycythaemia
- cerebral ischaemia, occurring most often in patients younger than two years old with iron deficiency anaemia
- bacterial endocarditis:
- prophylactic antibiotics are essential before and after dental and certain surgical procedures
- congestive heart failure in the infant with pulmonary atresia
- sudden cardiac death is a late complication of surgically-treated patients
