Hypertension is an important risk factor for:
- stroke:
- both systolic and diastolic hypertension cause stroke
- systolic hypertension is most closely linked to stroke
- systolic hypertension:
- doubles the risk of stroke in women
- quadruples the risk of stroke in men
- ischaemic heart disease
- left ventricular hypertrophy and cardiac failure
