Inferior surface
The inferior surface of the first rib is relatively smooth compared to superior surface:
- posteriorly it is crossed obliquely by the first intercostal nerves and vessels
- medially, the cervical pleura is attached and passes anteriorly in a broad band
- at the point of greatest curvature, fibres of serratus anterior can arise
- anterior to the tubercle at the most lateral edge, the intercostal muscles arise
- anteriorly on the medial edge, the suprapleural membrane begins to arise
