Prevention of hepatic encephalopathy
Oesophageal bleeds may precipitate acute hepatic encephalopathy in patients with liver disease. The risk of encephalopathy is reduced by:
- neomycin:
- 250-1000 mg orally four time per day
- reduces the bacterial fauna of the gut
- lactulose:
- 30-90 ml three times per day
