Indications in chronic retention
Catheterisation is indicated in chronic retention in:
- acute on chronic retention
- a patient who is ill, managing a medical emergency - catheterisation may correct an underlying hyperkalaemia and promote a subsequent diuresis
- the patient who already has a urinary tract infection
