Causes of negative cultures
Negative cultures occur in 3 to 20% of cases, usually as a result of prior antibiotic treatment. Other possible causes include:
- fastidious streptococci and anaerobes
- Coxiella burnetti, Q fever, requires complement fixation tests
- Chlamydia - requires immunofluorescence or complement fixation
- Candida - requires antigen test
