Aetiology: with respect to speed of onset
Acute aortic regurgitation may be caused by:
- infective endocarditis
- aortic dissection In these situations there is an abrupt volume load into an undilated chamber, causing acute pulmonary oedema.
Chronic aortic regurgitation may be caused by:
- aortic root dilatation - Marfan's etc, also in elderly
- bicuspid aortic valve
- rheumatic disease
