Non-union of fracture

Authoring team

This is the failure to achieve bony healing at a fracture site - the medullary cavity of the fragments have closed with the fragments separate.

The most widely accepted definition of non-union is a fracture that persists for at least 9 months without signs of healing for 3 months. This is a loose definition, as not every bone behaves the same, and that the use of medicines like bisphosphonates can affect healing time.
