Types
There are a number of types of intussusception, as follows:
- ileo-ileal - ileum invaginates into adjacent ileum
- ileo-colic - the ileo-ileal intussusception extends through the ileo-caecal valve to also affect the colon
- ileo-caecal - the apex of the intussusception is the ileo-caecal valve
- colo-colic - colon invaginates into the adjacent colon; often secondary to a protruding tumour of the bowel wall
