Infective causes of sensorineural hearing loss
Infective causes of nerve deafness include:
- rubella syndrome
- congenital syphilis
- congenital toxoplasmosis
- congenital CMV
- herpes zoster
- meningitis, 1% of children with meningitis have bilateral sensorineural hearing loss; particularly haemophilus influenzae type B meningitis before vaccination had an impact
- mumps - before vaccination this accounted for the majority of acquired sensorineural deafness.
