Infective causes of sensorineural hearing loss

Infective causes of nerve deafness include:

  • rubella syndrome
  • congenital syphilis
  • congenital toxoplasmosis
  • congenital CMV
  • herpes zoster
  • meningitis, 1% of children with meningitis have bilateral sensorineural hearing loss; particularly haemophilus influenzae type B meningitis before vaccination had an impact
  • mumps - before vaccination this accounted for the majority of acquired sensorineural deafness.
