There are both invasive and non-invasive means of investigating the primary site of pathology for stroke:

  • non-invasive methods:
    • ultrasound - if normal, no need for more invasive methods
    • cardiac imaging:
      • transthoracic echocardiography
      • transoesophageal echocardiography

  • invasive methods:
    • angiography
