Prognosis

The prognosis is based mostly upon the underlying aetiology; poor prognosis is seen in:

  • structural anomalies
  • severe birth asphyxia
  • severe intraventricular haemorrhage
  • early hypocalcaemia

The prognosis is also worsened in:

  • early onset
  • prolonged, frequent seizures
  • poor response to medication
  • recurrence over a period of days
  • preterm delivery; low birth weight
  • established neurological signs
